Red Ribbon Week & Science with our Stuffed Animals

We wrapped up our Red Ribbon week with pajama day!! It was an extra special day because we brought our stuffed animals in today as well. In Science we've been learning about the external and internal structures of plants and animals. Today we read to our stuffed animals about the muscles and bones in an elephant and then listened to our stuffed animals tell us about how muscles and bones help the elephants survive.

Omegaman Assembly

Today we had a special visit from Omegaman! He talked to us about making positive choices and being a dreammaker. He shared tips on how to handle tough situations and encouraged us to be a friend and not a bully. To see more check out his website: http://omegamanschools.com/

He shared some pretty neat tricks with us too. We were amazed to see him bend a steel rod - he even held it in his teeth! A few of our classmates helped out when Omegaman shared about bullying. :)

Thanks Lauren, Korrah, & Nathan K. for helping out!! :)

Area Method with Multiplication

We have been working to solve area and array problems in our multiplication. We have made it to multiplying a two-digit number by a one-digit number! Woot! Woot! The last two days we have worked to use the Area Method to break about a two-digit number so we can see what we are multiplying. Here is a quick podcast showing how we use the Area Method.

Tonight on our math homework there is the option to check the math problems using a QR Reader. There are many free QR readers available for tablets and smartphones. The one we use in class is called QR Reader and looks like this:

Word Work

This week we're trying something new with our Word Work! We have four set tasks for the week. Your child will have the choice in the order these tasks are completed. As they complete the tasks, they will be able to check it off on their Bubble sheet. I will collect the Bubble Sheets at the end of the week as well as monitor completed tasks throughout the week. While still having that choice, we are working on managing our work time and being responsible for our work.

Math Problem Solving

In math, we've been working on solving word problems! One way we've practiced is by using our mathboards and meeting on our carpet area. We talk about the problems and strategies we can use. Then we work with a knee buddy or individually to solve. We usually have one of our friends go up to the board and solve at the same time and then they share their math thinking with us. I love listening to the kids share and help each other out!
